The novel’s premise is outrageous and enviable: the legal status of personhood is granted a particular river, and the River is obliged to argue in court for its existence, consistent with the expectations and assumptions of humans, the law, history, all in the context of its confusing status as beloved and enjoyed but also polluted, abused, and poisoned.
